I am a HUGE fan of Instagram, but such free services, without a visible revenue stream (i.e. advertisements) worry me. I fear that I will get even more vested in the use of Instagram to easily share and view iPhone photographs, only to find it gone one day.

How does this company/service survive? I'm not sure, but I hope it does for a long time.

Instagram's 4-person team has announced that the service's users have posted over 150 million photos. Consider that the free, social photo-sharing

Actually, I've not used all 250 new features, at least I don't think that I have. But of the ones that I have used, there is a feature that is going to take a bit of getting accustomed to using - scrolling. Certainly, others have posted on this and other social networks regarding the difficulty moving up/down documents and web pages. And, yes, I know there is a setting which will remove the "natural" (side note: this isn't natural...yet) behavior of Lion's scrolling. But I've not gone to that. Why? I want to follow the Apple way. Yes, it's at times confusing. Yes, muscle memory needs to be reset. Yes, I'll get it...in time.

As Steve Jobs once said "People don't know what they want."

So, I'll bathe in the warmth of the distortion reality field, and come to learn to use my computers the "Apple Way." Because, Steve knows best.

Such A Pleasant Surprise!

What surprise is that, you ask? I met someone who reads this blog today. I was at the Fair Oaks Apple Store, and a kind gentleman, begged my pardon, then introduced himself as a reader of my blog. I was taken a back at first, as I didn't think anyone read these missives of my life.

Hilton (forgive me, if I didn't properly catch your name), it was a joy and a pleasure to meet you. If you see me around, say hello again. I would love to know if you are able to hear the Beach Music "podcasts" that I've tried to create.

Oh, and for those wondering why I was at the Apple Store on a Thursday night. It was to get one of these:

Spotify? Yes Please

Spotify (an online music streaming service) is in a battle with iTunes for my ongoing music consumption attention. I've become a bit of a gadfly, jumping from Amazon's cloud player, then to Google's Music Beta, only to return to iTunes to purchase music (since I am primarily on my iPhone or iPad). But, Spotify is quickly becoming my go-to music player. I am still using the free version, but I feel a pull towards the premium version just so that I can stream music to iOS devices.

What stops me? I am waiting to see if Apple will come out with a streaming or subscription service.

My Hometown, Belmont, NC, hosts a music series during the summer. Generally, it's Beach Music. And what better band to kick off the series than The Chairmen of the Board. As you may know, General Normal Johnson, lead singer of the band and co-founder of Surfside Records, died last year. Fortunately, the band decided to stay together and to continue the tradition of playing the best music around.

Belmont is a small, former textile, town which has a train track that bisects it. Often a train will go through as a band is performing. This video captures this perfectly (the aspect ratio of the video and the Blogger template are at odds with one another, so you may have to double-click the video to see the full width on the YouTube site):

Looks like a fun time was had by many. I wish I could have been there.

I am sure that most people listen to Christmas or holiday season songs/music when putting up their Christmas tree, but in our house, we listen to Beach Music. Sometimes a holiday song or two will enter the mix, but it's mostly music of the Carolinas and Virginia. Some of my friends would say that I do everything to Beach Music. But, what can I say, it's what I grew up on.

I've long been a huge advocate of wearing ties to football games, and a blazer when the weather isn't too hot.

This is picture from the '84 Virginia Tech vs. Virginia game, in Charlottesville, VA. A group of us went up for the game. Our schools colors are Maroon and Orange, while UVA's are Blue and Orange. So, it made for a colorful day.

This is a recent picture from a game in Blacksburg. I broke out the Pennington And Bailes VT pants and Cobb is sporting their shorts.

I am a big fan of motif pants, which leads me to this photo, which I came across on the Hokie Sports website. I don't know how long it will take me, or where I will find them, but I must have these pants:

Volvo 4 Life

I was at Don Beyer Volvo, Falls Church, today to have one of the day-time running lights on my XC90 replaced, and while waiting I decided to walk around the sales lot to look at the 2011 models. To say I am a Volvo man (4 Life) would be an understatement. My first was a 145 wagon, followed by a couple 245s, then a couple XC70s and now a 2005 XC90.

Though I plan to keep my existing car for at least 10 years (fingers crossed), I love looking at the newer models. Every year, Volvo adds a new model, option or feature. This year it is City Safety, a feature that will stop the car should you become distracted and not notice that the vehicle in front of you has stopped or slowed. This is a standard feature on the XC60, cross-over SUV models.

The XC60s are nice, but I am drawn to the XC90. Below are a few pictures that I took using my iPhone:

Since the passing last winter of my beloved Lab, Priscilla, I've thought of getting another dog. I just could not bring my myself to do so. But I came across this cutie while at L.L. Bean, and couldn't resist. His name is Beaufort, Beau for short.

SLF and I took a fall vacation to Priscilla Beach, MA, then a couple day trips to Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, Maine, Boston and a few other locals spots. The advantage of going in early September is that most places are still open, but the crowds are gone.

We had a blast, ate a ton of lobster (rolls), drank some good local micro-brewed beers and spent way too much time in the car.

The pictures below were taken with my iPhone using the new High Dynamic Range (HDR) function, which takes 3 pictures (over-exposed, normal, under-exposed), then merges for the best possible picture. The downside is a the slightest movement/motion can lead to ghosting effects.

The "Hot Sign" was on so I had to stop at the Kripsy Kreme Doughnuts store

Before that, I dropped into "City Dogs in the Slip" to have a Star Pale Ale while catching a bit of the Redskins vs Jets game (which the Redskins won).

In the early '80s, this spot was known as the Dog House and it was crazy popular among the college set. It's a small place, so it would get crowded quickly. They played beach music and Motown which lead to people trying to dance the Shag on the tables.

This reminds me of many a road trip from Virginia Tech to other Virginia colleges. Whether it was a quick trip to Radford, or a longer trip to UVA, Richmond, W&M, W&L or a host of other road trips. We always had beach music and loud singing. I recall even trying to shag (while sitting) in the back of Cobb's car once.

When we got out of school, it was road trips to Middleburg, the Plains, back to Richmond, down to Myrtle, over to the Eastern Shore, up to the Cape, out to the Outer Banks, but still beach music and singing as loud as possible ensued.

My Barber:

This morning I had a few errands planned, which included getting a haircut. I've been going to Kay for a few years now. She is friendly, professional and provides a good haircut. Plus she gives a cold towel head and neck massage at the end, which I love. I've often thought of having a picture with her, but generally, the other barbers were too busy to take a photo. Fortunately, Mimi was available, and Kay was willing.

So, here is a picture of Kay and I:

Loss of a great local(-ish) eatery:While getting gas, my iPhone buzzed that I had an email. I was shocked to read that Local Six Forty-Seven was announcing that it was closing its food cart, and that today would be the last time one could get their food. They would be at Barrel Oak Winery one last time. BOW is in Delaplane, Virginia, which was about 30 miles from where I was at the time. That was not too far for one last chance at their burgers. Local Six Forty-Seven has (err, had) the best, and I do mean the best, burgers I have ever tried (see a picture below). Derek and Amanda are the owners, and Derek is the chef. They were featured last year on Good Morning America, as part of its "Best Food Carts In America" series. They were a finalist, but unfortunately did not win.
I came to know of them at our town's farmer's market, which is held on Friday afternoon, early evening. I would often leave the office as early as possible on Fridays to get to the market before its closing at 6:30pm.

As I was waiting for my burger, so many people came up to say "We love you!" or "We'll miss you so much!"

This is the burger that we all will miss. I always got the Kobe beef burger, but they made many other varieties. I waited to get home before enjoying the burger, as I wanted to savor every bite and it was too hot out at Barrel Oak Winery to eat outside.

A few pictures of Woody's Eatery (formerly Woody's BBQ), which has the best BBQ and crab cake sandwich on the VA Eastern shore. Not only is the food excellent, but it has a friendly, funky vibe. I highly reccommend the Emerson Tyler (Lemonade/Sweet Tea mix).

If you are ever on Chincoteague Island, VA, stop in for lunch or dinner, and tell Gayle and Larry that I said "Hey!"

We are going to the beach this weekend!!!

Woody's Beach BBQ is in town (on Maddox, towards the national seashore) on Chincoteague Island, VA. At least it was there last year. Certainly, one should eat seafood when at the shore or a beach community. But this place has, or had, great BBQ. So, I hope it is still there.

I am looking forward to putting down a few footprints in the sand.

Volvo XC 90s: I drive the one on the right, I would love to have the one on the left. I am sure you may be thinking what is the difference! The one on the left is newer, perhaps a 2009 model. My "Myrtle" is a 2005 model. She has about 104,000 miles. I keep her in a well maintained manner. She is typically quite clean, with a tank of gas. I love this car dearly. But there are times I want something a little more sporty. Why then the car on the left. It is a TURBO model...It seems so silly when written.

Huh. I should probably pine away for a convertible Volvo.

The SLF and I went on a couple of differing road trips to North Carolina recently. The first trip was early late April to Wilkesboro, NC to attend MerleFest. The second trip was mid-May to Belmont, NC - my hometown to visit my sisters. Both trips were enjoyable, though long drives from Northern Virginia. We did stop off at Virginia Tech and Radford University.

My hometown, Belmont, North Carolina, has an every other Friday night street concert, featuring beach music. This year's series opens with General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board on May 21, 2010. Since I only go home every 7 years or so (like locust), this is the year to visit and what another great reason to head South, then to also see the Chairmen.

Whole House Audio...The Apple Way

It started with wanting to listen to my iTunes library, which is on my iMac, while hanging out in the den, which lead to wanting to also listen in the bedroom...then I thought, why not the bathroom as well.

To tie it all together, I am using an Apple Airport Extreme (main base station), three Airport Expresses, a set of Harmon/Karmdon Soundsticks (iMac), a Bose 1-2-3 system (Den), a Bose Wave Radio (bedroom) and a JBL Onstage (bathroom).

The iMac is connected to the network by ethernet cable to the main base station, which serves the three Expresses wirelessly.

It is all quite silly, though not terribly expensive, to have music capable of playing in most rooms of my home.

Surely, someone understands.

It is kind of like the picture below from Apple's website:

This was all inspired while listening to the "HDTV and Home Theater Podcast" episode about their whole house set ups. You can listen as well, you may want to skip ahead to 27 minutes, 20 seconds in the timeline.

Okay, So I do have to wait until the end of April to purchase the iPad 64GB 3G.

I am often asked why I am interested in getting the iPad, since I have an new iMac and a reasonably new MacBook, as well as an iPhone 3GS. Though, I have the iPhone with me must of the time, there are occasions when the iPhone's screen is just too small. And the MacBook doesn't have constant connectivity. Since AT&T hasn't made tethering available on the iPhone, the iPad will give me the screen size, connectivity and updated applications that will increase my personal and professional workflow/time management.
